College Comp and Research Individual Summary October 6, 2016 Dogs depend on humans as much as humans depend on dogs. Dogs need a human to take care of them, feed them, and clean up after them, just as humans need dogs to feel needed, comforted, or even loved. According to Alex Ballingall, canines often fill a void for some people that do not or cannot have children or a significant other. They give a sense of need while also feeling needed. Dog owners who are the most caring, well-intentioned owners use leashes and chains, as do those who are not qualified to care for a pet. Organizations such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Dogs Deserve Better are fighting to eliminate such practices. Ballingall noted that dogs which are tied up often become more aggressive, but owners can avoid this by allowing their pets to have social interaction. According to dog behavior expert Silvia Jay, “The impact of crating is similar, says Jay, in that dogs left in crates for hours on end can experience distress from social isolation” (qtd. in Ballingall, par. 15). A distressed pet can lead to a distressed owner. People create such a bond with their pets that when the pet is no longer a part of the owner’s life, the owner is left heartbroken. Humans, the same as pets, are social animals; both rely on the strength of relationships. In essence, pets in society have nearly become a necessity due to the feeling of need a person gets when owning a pet.
